Prefab Shelters Helping Social Causes in South Africa

Cape’s Town new “safe space” will be built with prefab shelters, under the FW de Klerk Boulevard freeway bridge, to help the street people get prepared to find new jobs, strengthen their family ties and help them get through substance abuse when need be. In all, it will offer 96 spaces to people in need.

Safe Space for People Living on the Street

The Culemborg expansion site is yet another example of Containers Solutions in South Africa, as it uses prefab shelters to house and protect some of the weakest individuals of Cape Town: The ones living on the street. Although it is an operation led by the mayoral committee for community services, it will be under the direction of an external service provider.

Those who will choose to call this safe space their home, will have to follow very strict rules, as no one considered under the influence of drugs or alcohol will be allowed to enter the premises. The other condition, for anyone to get in, will be to indicate his will to enter one of the many city programmes for help such as rehabilitation, psycho-social care or personal development, leaving a wide range of possibilities available to the potential lodgers.

A solution to the Overcrowded Homeless Camp to Prevent against the Coronavirus

Whereas at the beginning the idea of the homeless camp was a good idea when the COVID-19 appeared, it is now too crowded and can be considered, in reverse, to be a danger to spreading even more the coronavirus, as well as tuberculosis. Therefore, a solution needed to be found. A representative of the mayoral committee expressed that the new safe space was not only a traditional shelter place but also a transitional space for those looking for help.

It comes at the right time, with the colder weather of winter coming in, and so many are looking for a shelter to take them in. This is the third safe space put in place, and it comes with a complete outdoor entertainment area. The hope is that these spaces will help the participants to go back to a normal life by helping them find employment and a home of their own.

For now, people are camping in front of the facility, as they wait for it to open. Although they will not be able to shelter everyone at first, 200 more people should be able to find room soon, on the site, without breaking the regulation of social distancing.
