What are the critics’ initial reactions?
Ms. Marvel has high expectations now that Marvel Studios has a number of series behind it. MCU’s Disney + offering has had an almost impeccable track record so far, and has received positive reactions from both critics and fans. WandaVision, Loke, Knights of the Moon, and several delivered exceptional stories on the streaming service, so it’s now up to Kamala Khan’s solo show to meet the high bar again.
Not only that, but Ms. Marvel has been the subject of criticism and controversy in the run-up to the launch, mainly due to the change in the powers of the titular hero. People from Marvel Studios, like President Kevin Feige, have done their best to reassure fans, though some are still skeptical about whether the show’s rendering will match the heights of the comics’ portrayal.

Charles Murphy of Murphy’s Multiverse found the pilot episode surprising “in the best ways” about that teenage fans will “fall in love” with Ms. Marvel:
“Ms. Marvel
pilot episode surprised me in the best way. It’s as close as we ‘ve come in the MCU that comic book pages come to life. It’s inventive, bright and lots of fun. My strong feeling is that teens will fall in love with this show. I know my kids will. “
CineXpress’s Cangiano fig described the first two episodes as “a fun, witty and colorful introduction” to the history of Kamala Khan:
“Iman Vellani is amazing as a young Kamala Khan alias Ms. Marvel. The first 2 episodes are a fun, witty and colorful introduction to her imaginative teenage story. Style and tone reminded me of Mitchells vs. The Machines. So far, so good Looking forward to the rest of it. “
Mary Maerz of Murphy’s Multiverse had “meh “ expectations for the series, but became more excited about Kamala Khan’s future after watching the first two episodes, while also saying that she “optimistic” about the change of the young hero’s powers:

“I got to see the first 2 episodes of Ms. Marvel. Had high expectations but so far it is wonderful. That’s the first thing that actually gets me excited about The Marvels. Iman Vellani is perfect as Kamala Khan, and I feel optimistic about the changes in her origins / powers now. ”
Collider’s Maggie Lovitt felt like the show “Do not quite know what it is yet” after the first two episodes, but remained hopeful that it would find its foothold as the show continues:
“I have seen the first two episodes of Ms. Marvel! The series feels like a light-hearted departure from previous series; filled with smart editing, smart dialogue and teenage issues. It does not quite know what it is yet, but hopefully it will soon. Iman Vellani is fantastic. ”
Comicbook.com’s Jenna Andersen thought that Ms. Marvel is “the best-constructed MCU TV show yet,” and is ready to see even more of the series:
“The first two episodes of Ms. Marvel are so wonderful! This feels like the best-crafted MCU TV show to date, while also perfectly capturing Kamala’s world in the comics. The aesthetics and MCU connections prevail, and the cast is incredible charming. I can not wait to see more. “
Film critic Zach Pope praised the show’s stylish visuals and in the end called it one “Pleasant surprise:”

“Miss Marvel is a nice surprise. The first 2 episodes establish a stylistically coming of age story visually / historically that was AMAZING .. Reminded me a bit of Dope in some ways. Iman Vellani Ms Marvel is one of your next favorite Marvel Heroes! Very happy to see the rest ”
FandomWire’s Reilly Johnson believed that what the first two episodes lacked in action, they compensated for with related characters and Iman Vellani’s charisma:
“Had a chance to see Ms. Marvel Ep 1-2 for FandomWire! Although it seems to be aimed at a younger audience, it’s charming and enjoyable so far. Characters can be related. There’s not much action yet, but its main charisma keeps things going. floats. Interested in seeing what happens next! “
Author Tariq Raouf praised the series for the positive Muslim representation it brings to the MCU, while also highlighting the exceptional music:
“Ms. Marvel is an epic, game-changing series for Muslim representation in MCU. By the time the second episode ended, I was already begging for more.
Iman Vellani is a standout as Kamala and I can’t wait to see her in the rest of the series. AND THE MUSIC IS SO GOOD. “
On the opposite end of the spectrum is The Nerds of Color podcast host Swara Salih was a bit more critical of how the series handled its portrayal of Islam, but had high praise for Vellani in the lead role:
ADVERTISING
“Iman Vellani is amazing as Kamala Khan. She brings all the liveliness, passion and awkwardness that we all love Kamala for. She does her best and perseveres constantly. Iman wants a unique future in MCU and beyond … Ms. Marvel’s portrayal of Islam is frankly a mixed bag, there are good moments of resonance, but also indications that Kamala’s Muslim community is too conservative and “holding her back.” Instead of dealing with external societal issues, it’s all internally, at least until further notice. “
The Wellesley Times’ Maryam Ahmad | had similar thinking and felt that the conflict between Kamala Khan as a Muslim girl could have coped with some more nuances:
“So far, the series seems to be creating the big conflict as Kamalas with the norms of her society. But it’s too close to ‘the Muslim girl just wants to be free of rules’ for my liking. I would like to see more nuances there, eventually as the series progresses … All in all I like it !! I’m also so excited, for myself and kids like my sisters, to see Ms. Marvel on screen. She inspired me to write because I saw myself in her, and to tell stories that others could also see themselves in. Now I get to write about her !! “
Desi Geek Girls’ Preeti Chhibber have “have never felt so seen” after seeing Ms. Marvel‘s premiere, and also called on Marvel to put Iman Vellani “Total:”
“I’ve seen the first episode of Ms. Marvel and spoiler free – I love this show. It’s everything I could have wished for. I say this a lot about our girl Kamala Khan, but I’ve literally never felt so seen. But like me … specifically. Iman Vellani is a JOY. Put her in everything. “
Contributes to comic book resources Ashley Saunders assured skeptics that the changes to Ms. Marvel’s powers “still captures the heart of who she is as a person,” while also calling for AvengersCon to become a reality:
ADVERTISING
“Ms. Marvel is EVERYTHING I wanted. Iman is PERFECT as Kamala. After two episodes I can not wait to see what happens next. For those who are worried about the power changes, it works and still captures the heart of who she is as a person & a hero. Can we also get a REAL Avengers Con? “
Radio Times’ Sci-Fi & Fantasy Editor Huw Fullerton was not a fan of the reference humor related to Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, but generally enjoyed the first two episodes:
“So the first two episodes of Ms. Marvel this week, and I thought it was great – I did not care so much about Avenger’s fandom stuff, but once it’s over, it’s very charming. Looking forward to see more (ep 2 especially good). “
The Wrap’s Brandon Katz thought the reworked forces for Kamala looked like “STORE,” while praising lead author Bisha K. Ali for the show’s exploration of the protagonist:
“Ms. Marvel: Enjoying the high school sitcom style. Chief writer Bisha K. Ali has crafted a confident identity with relatable family dynamics that sets a clear arc for Kamala to discover her true self. Her powers look GREAT and that animation FX blooms accentuate the story. “
Will Ms. Marvel’s almost-universal recognition extended to viewers?
Right out of the gate, Ms. Marvel has received overwhelmingly positive reactions from both critics and early viewers. Universal praise has been given to Iman Vellani’s perfect casting as Kamala Khan, proving that Marvel Studios’ casting has done it once again.

From the sound of it, critics have mostly been won over by the changes in Ms. Marvel’s powers. Some diehard fans of the original comics may still be hesitant, but it seems that the adjustments will still be related to Kamala’s story thematically, even though her origins have been slightly changed to MCU.
The point of contention now seems to be around the Muslim representation in the series, with some appreciating the efforts of Marvel Studios, while others were hoping for a little more. Since only the first two episodes have been shown so far, it is possible that some of these criticisms could be addressed while the show continues, just as Oscar Isaacs Moon Knights was criticized for his lack of Jewish representation only to include this aspect of the character later in the series.
Fans can decide when Ms. Marvel launches at Disney + on June 8.
