Hey, it’s time for a leg! Congratulations, congratulations! Dilyn the Dog here, the country’s Numero Uno dog, Downing Street top dog, who is one year old this week.
What can I tell you about my life so far, fans? I was born in Merthyr Tydfil, in a distant land called Wales; a place where the daffodils are yellow and the snow too, if I have anything to do with it.
I was saved from a breeder because I was going to be dropped off. I don’t even know what that means. Down on the floor, in my basket?
Downing Street dog Dilyn celebrated turning one this week and looks back on his crazy first year as the country’s best dog
I was adopted by my wonderful people Boris and Carrie and came to live here in London in the heart of your government. Suddenly I was famous!
Right there with Scooby Doo, Pluto, Lassie, Snoopy, Mutley, Pongo, Gnasher and Toto – or the cabinet, like your ethem.
What a crazy 12 months, as I told JAN MOIR …
1: Downing St here I come, September 2019
Cameras filmed being carried to No. 10 in my own dog bag. I was wearing a matching neckerchief, but I looked a little nervous.
There was good reason for that. I was a young puppy with everything to live for – and I would take this opportunity with two legs.
In September 2019, Dilyn was first portrayed at number 10 in a dog bag
2: Larry, Chief Mouser
My first shock. Larry the cat and I had to share a house?
Listen mom dolls, you are joking. He was about as friendly as a liaison committee – and look at the size of him!
Larry has been here through four prime ministers for 13 years – and, boy, won’t he let you know.
He always poses around the front door of No. 10.
He doesn’t understand there’s a new boy in town. No wonder he doesn’t like me.
Downing Street cat Larry has been at number 10 through four prime ministers for 13 years and now has to share his home with Dilyn
3: Campaign for goldsmith
Don’t I look smart in my real blue line? We campaigned for a Member of Parliament named Zac Goldsmith, who just went on and lost his seat.
What a waste of my time! I never get those dog years back.
Zac may have failed the electorate, but to cheer him up, he was given a zest for life and a fine title as Secretary of the Pacific, Trees, Weather, Clouds, International Snowballs and Group Tiddlywinks.
Dilyn became involved in politics when he joined Carrie Symonds to campaign for Zac Goldsmith, who lost his seat in Richmond Park in the election
I’m new to the game, but sometimes I feel like I’ll never understand politics.
Zac is also Minister of Animal Welfare. So maybe he can swing some chewy candies for starters? After everything I’ve done for him …
4: Antlers and tinsel at Christmas, December, 2019
I love the Christmas tinsel collar, but I’m not sure about this reindeer antler.
Is it my pride as proud Jack Russell to be dressed like that?
Or should I just go with the festive flow and don’t mind looking like a dog breakfast?
Why don’t we hold a ruffian on this topic …
Dilyn celebrated his first Christmas on Downing Street with new owners Boris Johnson and Carrie Symonds by wearing a stylish tinsel necklace
Carrie Symonds shared a Christmas holiday photo of her dog on social media and wrote, “I’m sorry Dilyn. I’m a bad mother ‘next to the hilarious photo
5: Smart Union Jack Coat, February 1, 2020
Brexit is finally here and I have a Union Jack jacket to celebrate. It gives me a statesman-like appearance, don’t you think?
Like my master Boris, I develop a taste for power, the cut and the thrust of political life. It is intoxicating! Don’t call me, I’ll hit you.
I make sure my people smell of your people. Let’s all dig a big hole and jump in. Dominic, you can stop digging now!
That makes me think. Mr. Cummings sat in the garden while many people asked him questions. Weird or what?
My opinion was also asked by Laura Kuenssberg.
She rubbed my stomach – so I told her everything.
Brexit arrived on February 1 and a Dilyn was photographed in a Union Jack coat to celebrate was shared on the dog’s Instagram
6: True love with Bailey Javid, Valentine’s day, 2020
I fell in love with Bailey, the doggo to the treasury who lives next door with Sajid Javid’s family.
She’s blonde, gorgeous and, most importantly, she’s not too picky. Every morning we romp in the garden in bliss.
Because I’m just a boy standing in front of a cavapoo and asking her to roll with me in the squirrel shit. And she does!
We dream of dating, of meeting incognito in a local pub, where I will say, “Make me a double and give one to the bitch at the end of the bar.”
Dilyn spent Valentine’s Day 2020 with Bailey Javid, the dog in the treasure chest. But Dilyn was heartbroken when his neighbor’s best friend disappeared
But something terrible has happened. One day Bailey was there, the next day she was a missing girl. I lost my mind, I lost all my dogship, I went mad with grief. Was it something I stocked up on?
No. Mister Javid left quickly after what people call an “unhelpful political argument”.
“Don’t worry, Dilyn,” said Boris. “There are many more blondes in the park.”
Well, I think he would know!
7: The recast that never happened, March 12, 2020
I almost choke on my breakfast. I am as sick as a dog. A so-called newspaper has reported that Boris and Carrie have become “tired” of me and that I may not make the next domestic reshuffle.
They say our house is full of “dog shit” and I’m more of a pest than a pet. WHAT?
I cut back my tears. Yes, I admit there has been a whoopsie every now and then.
But nothing compared to Mr. Hammond’s mess at the Department of Defense. Or Mr. Hancock is currently in sickness and health.
A newspaper reported that Boris and Carrie have become ‘tired’ of Dilyn and may not make the next domestic realignment – but luckily he made it the other way
Larry the cat finds my apparent demise hilarious, but luckily for me, Carrie agrees to my version of the events. “Hush, puppy,” she says, and gives me a kiss. Then she makes a statement.
“There has never been a happier, healthier and more loved dog than our Dilyn,” she thunders. Woof! I love that girl.
8: Carrie and I isolate March 27, 2020
Pregnant Carrie and I are concerned about Boris, who is ill in his hospital. She misses her human partner, but she is not alone – she has me.
I try to be here for her, to be a comfort and a good boy.
“There were times that were very dark indeed. My heart goes out to everyone in similar situations, concerned about their loved ones, ”she tweeted.
Boris Johnson was hospitalized during the coronavirus pandemic, but Dilyn stayed at home to isolate herself with Carrie Symonds
When Boris was recovering, she thanked the NHS and the staff at St. Thomas’ Hospital. “I will continue to thank you,” she said.
Anydog else would she like to thank? I think we all know who.
9: Enter baby Wilfred, May 3, 2020
Ahum. I did not sign up for this. A baby was not in my social contract. Who thought this was a good idea?
For a minute Carrie is totally #adoptdontshop and #adogis for life, rubs my stomach and asks if I am a good boy, a sweet boy, the best boy in the world.
Next time, she’ll jump out of another Johnson – like the world needs more!
Wilfred Lawrie Nicholas Johnson was welcomed to the family on April 29 at 9am, named after both Boris and Carrie’s grandfathers
And then – this is the worst – bringing him home to live with us. Wilfred is cute, he smells good and makes funny sounds.
Sometimes all night crying, but apparently that’s not the baby, it’s Mr. Sunak looking at the economic forecasts.
10: Jogging with Boris, May 25, 2020
Who exactly is the rescue animal here? My master Boris is still struggling to get fully fit again, but everyone can see the efforts he is making.
And who is next to him? Not Larry the cat, but I, Dilyn the Dog, his right hunting dog.
We’re going to endure this together no matter what happens, one leg after the other, on the long walks of life. Woof!
Recently, Dilyn, the famous dog, was pictured along with Boris Johnson during their daily exercise locking routine
