The Trans X-Men Escapade joins the Marvel universe for pride
For its annual Pride Month celebration, this year Marvel Comics will introduce a brand new character to Marvel’s Voices: Pride # 1 – Shela Sexton, aka Escapade, a transmutant with a really cool power. Escapade, created by author Charlie Jane Anders and artists Ro Stein and Ted Brandt, can instantly change location or swap any specific physical or abstract property with another person, including objects, powers, and skills.
Escapade, however, can not use its powers at will. She can only maintain her strength for a few hours and must be within seven feet of her goal, which is a very short range. In addition, there is every possibility that things can go awry – the more complicated the shift, the more likely the flub.
But Escapade does not act alone. She has a super-filled tool belt and a very technically savvy best friend, Morgan Red. The pair are professional thieves on a winning streak, but in Marvel’s Voices: Pride # 1, Shela meets Emma Frost and Destiny, and everything changes.
“I’ve loved the Marvel Universe for as long as I can remember, and may not sing the Spider-Man cartoon theme in the shower regularly. So I was so excited to be able to introduce a brand new hero to stand next to all my favorites,” says Anders in Escapades’ disclosure announcement. “I hope Escapade and Morgan Red will inspire trans and non-binary people everywhere to believe that they too can fight for justice with the power of creativity and select family.”
“Now more than ever, we need a hero like Shela Sexton that people can look up to,” Brandt adds. “It was a real honor and a privilege to be a part of her creative process!”
Stein agrees, saying, “It’s very exciting to be a part of bringing a new character into Marvel comics. Working on Charlie Jane’s script was a lot of fun, and I hope people enjoy reading about Escapade just as much,” as we did with putting together her first outing. on the side. “
Marvel’s Voices: Pride # 1 will introduce Escapade and Morgan Red and set the couple up to join the wider Marvel Universe through the X-Men. Marvel says there is a deadly prophecy involved, and Escapade will join New Mutants through a special bow written by Donald.
In a Twitter thread after the announcement, Anders says: “Shela is a thief and a trickster who uses gadgets to extract her robberies. She does not like to rely on her mutant power, for reasons that will become clear after reading the story. She identifies as a supervillain – but a supervillain who only helps people. ”
She also adds that Shela and Morgan live with a genetically modified flying turtle named Hibbert, whom they apparently acquired through a robbery.
In addition to writing by Anders and art by Stein and Brandt, Escapade’s narrative in Marvel’s Voices: Pride # 1 will feature colors by Tamra Bonvillain. Additional contributors to the anthology edition include Christopher Cantwell, Andrew Wheeler, Alyssa Wong, Grace Freud, Ira Madison III, Danny Lore, Stephen Byrne, Lorenzo Suzi, Brittney Williams, Kei Zama, Scott B. Henderson, and Lucas Werneck.
Marvel’s Voices: Pride # 1 will be released on June 22 with a headline by Nick Robles.
