Overall, this successor justifies itself. It’s a fully loaded entertainment package with an extensive adventure. However, it feels a little too long towards the end, which means it could do well with a little bit of trimming. But nonetheless, this franchise remains true to its origins and delivers what it promises, both for fans of the game and non-fans.

Idris Elbas Knuckles, on the other hand, is what I brought with me from Sonic 2. Too bad there are not nearly enough of him in the film, at least not for me. I want Elba to read goodnight stories to me so I finally sleep well. Knuckles are red, he’s literal and he’s angry. Just tell him about a fight and he’s coming up. But he is a sport, willing to learn, happy to just let go and be. The instructive moments here do not come from the blue hedgehog hero, but the big red combative fur ball with Winter Soldier vibes. If there’s an Idris the Echidna movie on the anvil, I’m here for it.

A video game developed by the Japanese company Sega and released in 1991 did well in the action-adventure comedy film format of 2020. But the film about an anthropomorphic hedgehog with superpowers can not be a gift that keeps giving. So right from the word go, the blue fur ball that has way too much power for a guy who is so small and who is very much looking forward to his guardians taking off on a trip hardly catches the steam.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is a massive improvement over the first movie that provides a great family experience. While the human subplot pulls the film down, it is watching Sonic’s story that ultimately makes this film such a rewarding experience, especially for Sonic fans.
