Oklahoma passes two bills against abortion in one day with the goal of completely eradicating reproductive rights – newsdubai

As you have probably noticed by now, reproductive rights are under complete and total attack in the United States, so much so that Republican-led states really have to come up with something extra terrible to stand out. And on Thursday, Oklahoma did just that when its GOP-controlled legislature did not pass a single but thaw anti-abortion bills that are on their way to the governor’s desk where they are expected to be signed ASAP.

The first bill, passed Thursday morning by Oklahoma House, was modeled after the anti-abortion law passed by a bunch of Texas ghouls who believe the state should be allowed to dictate what a pregnant person may and may not do with their own body. Known as the Oklahoma Heartbeat Act, aka Senate Bill 1503, the law prohibits abortions after six weeks of pregnancy, a point where many people do not even know they are pregnant. Like Texas’ ban, the law relies on citizens to enforce it, a move designed to avoid being thrown out of the Supreme Court. Like the Texas ban, there are no exceptions in cases of rape or incest. Governor Kevin Stitt expected to “sign it within days,” according to the Associated Press. At that point, the law will take effect immediately once it is signed, as the Oklahoma Republicans passed it with a “distress” provision.

In the case of the second bill, which also copies the Texas enforcement mechanism, Oklahoma apparently responded to the call from anti-abortion activists to “do your worst” when its Senate passed a total ban on abortions by a vote of 35 to 10. The bill makes exceptions in cases of rape and incest – if reported to law enforcement, which of course places the burden on the victim – and for medical emergencies, but know that if at least one Republican lawmaker had been given his will, the law would prohibit the medical procedure with zero exceptions. According to Washington Post, state senator Warren Hamilton “questions why the bill should include an exception for ectopic pregnancy,” the leading cause of death in mothers in the first trimester, saying, “I wonder how we fit it with the idea of justice for all.” Of course, Hamilton also had a problem with the exceptions for rape and incest. The bill, which was passed in Parliament in March, is now on its way to Stitt’s desk.

Once signed into law, those bills will have a devastating impact not only on women in Oklahoma, but those in Texas who have traveled to the neighboring state for medical treatment since Texas’ Heartbeat Act came into force last September. According to data from the Oklahoma State Department of Health, quoted by the AP, “before the Texas ban went into effect last year, about 40 Texas women had abortions in Oklahoma each month … that number jumped to 222 Texas women in September and 243 in October. ” As Emily Wales, the interim president of Planned Parenthood Great Plains, told the business, “We serve as many Texans as Oklahomans right now, in some cases more Texans than Oklahomans.”

Earlier this month, Oklahoma (and Stitt signed) passed a separate bill making abortion a crime, though the good news – if there can be good news when it comes to imprisoning doctors for providing medical care – is that it does not will go into effect until later this year, and according to the AP “it may not withstand a legal challenge.”

In other Armageddon abortion news, an Ohio state official said Wednesday that pregnancies resulting from rape are an “option” that victims should not miss.
