Nvidia and SoftBank Group Corp. announced the termination of US $ 40 billion Arm deal due to significant regulatory challenges
Nvidia, a fast-growing company whose chips are best known for rendering images in video games, in September 2020 offered cash and stock then valued at US $ 40 billion for Arm, making it the most expensive deal ever among chip companies. Nvidia made the offer to buy Arm from SoftBank, the Japanese conglomerate that has owned the British company since 2016. Nvidia’s rising stock price later sent the transaction’s value much higher, settling at about US $ 60 billion on Monday.
But, Nvidia terminated its US $ 40 billion bid to acquire British chip designer Arm due to “significant regulatory challenges,” the chipmaker confirmed early Tuesday morning. The combination would have been the biggest in chip history. Arm, which licenses designs to Google, Apple, and others, now faces increased competition. And yet the disintegration of the Nvidia deal leaves the chipmaker with a more challenging road ahead, according to some industry watchers.
The founder and chief executive officer of Nvidia, Jensen Huang said that Arm has a bright future, and Nvidia will continue to support them as a proud licensee for decades to come. “Arm is at the center of the important dynamics in computing. Though we will not be one company, we will partner closely with Arm. The significant investments that Masa has made have positioned Arm to expand the reach of the Arm CPU beyond client computing to supercomputing, cloud, AI, and robotics. I expect Arm to be the most important CPU architecture of the next decade ”, he concluded.
SBG also announced that in coordination with Arm, it will start preparations for a public offering of Arm within the fiscal year ending March 31, 2023. SBG believes Arm’s technology and intellectual property will continue to be at the center of mobile computing and the development of artificial intelligence.
