Nightwing Creative Team driller and Batman / Alfred Standoff

Batman and Alfred Pennyworth are about to take a break Natvinge.

Series writer Tom Taylor posted a moment from the upcoming Natvinge # 92 on Twitter, which shows Alfred – Bruce Wayne’s butler and father figure – standing in the way of Caped Crusader while the two stare down at each other. There is no text or speech bubbles accompanying the image, so it is unclear what the confrontation is going to be about exactly. But since Alfred is currently dead in modern DC continuity, this is most likely yet another flashback included in Natvinge led by Taylor and artist Bruno Redondo.

Alfred was murdered by Bane in Batman # 77 in 2019 and he has been dead since without any resurrections. His absence has weighed on members of the Bat Family, such as Damian Wayne, who was considering bringing Alfred back to life in Robin # 12 because of his guilt, but ultimately decided against it. Natvinge focuses on Alfred’s legacy a great deal, leaving his fortune to Dick Grayson / Nightwing in his will, which Dick used to establish the Alfred Pennyworth Foundation in Natvinge # 83 to help his adopted city, Blüdhaven, and the world.

Natvinge has given readers many flashbacks with fan-favorite characters since Taylor and Redondo took over Natvinge #78. The duo’s premiere number opened with a flashback to a young Dick Grayson and Barbara Gordon joining forces to fight some thugs while the title’s crossover with Superman: Son of Kal-El revealed a touching moment between Nightwing and Jon Kent, when Jon was still Superboy instead of Superman.

There will not only be tensions between Batman and Alfred in Natvinge # 92, but also Blüdhaven. The upcoming issue starts what will be a “Battle for the Heart of the Flower Garden”, where villains like Blockbuster and Heartless make plays for the city. Blockbuster was already trying to get Dick murdered to put an end to his Haven project in the city, but these attempts were all thwarted with the help of Dick’s sister Melinda Zucco, Titans and Flash / Wally West.

Calls also promise some news to fans of the Dick-Babs relationship. After Dick receives some advice from Wally in the previous issue, the upcoming issue teases that Dick and Barbara “will finally define their relationship.” How exactly their romance will be defined is still unknown.

Natvinge # 92 is written by Taylor with interior and head cover from Redondo, colors by Adriano Lucas and letters by Wes Abbott. Variant covers for the track were contributed by Jamal Campbell, Jen Bartel and David Talaski. The issue goes on sale on May 17 from DC Comics.
