Marvel actor reveals sequel announcement

To say Eternal was highly anticipated before its release would be an understatement. This MCU epic had a cast full of superstars and an Oscar-winning director behind the camera. So when the film came out to middling reviews, it was confusing.

Upon release, Eternal was quickly swept under the rug as a minor disappointment for the MCU. The suspenseful narrative didn’t quite hit the mark as some thought it would, and the film’s villains turned out to be a bit underwhelming.

Then the prospect of one Eternal 2 seemed doubtful to many. Although the film set up some interesting new characters in the final moments (Harry Styles’ Starfox and Patton Oswalt’s Pip the Troll), as time has gone on it has felt less likely that a Eternal follow up would ever happen. That was it until now!

In an appearance on The Today Show, Eternal Actor Patton Oswalt apparently dropped a sequel to Marvel Studios’ Eternal is underway, with Chloé Zhao returning as director.

Oswalt spoke with Al Roker and publicly shared the announcement that “someone is coming Eternal successor” and “Chloe Zhao will direct it:”

“They’ve announced that there will be an Eternals sequel, Chloe Zhao will be directing it. So hopefully there will be more adventures of Starfox and Pip.”

Is Eternals 2 real?

If the future of the Eternals in the MCU was confusing before, it’s even more confusing after this seemingly genuine slip-up from Patton Oswalt. While one Eternal 2 have felt wasn’t in the cards, that was all but confirmed when Marvel Studios revealed their upcoming slate at San Diego Comic-Con. The studio announced the next half-decade of the MCU and Eternal 2 was noticeably absent.

So the fact that it – at least according to Oswalt – is happening seems a little strange. And even stranger is the fact that he seems to think Chloé Zhao is back to direct after it appeared she strained that relationship during the production of the first film.

But if this movie actually happens, fans may have already seen where it would fit into the calendar. Curating Marvel Studios’ SDCC panel, the studio tossed out a near-empty Phase 6 slate with only Fantastic four and two Avengers movie on the graphics. So if Eternal 2 is real, it can easily go into one of the empty slots sometime in phase 6.
