Live news: US trade deficit grows to record $ 109.8 billion
Ebay and Etsy posted weaker outlook for the coming months, triggering divestments of the shares on the two online marketplaces.
Both companies said on Wednesday that they were experiencing “headwinds”, with Etsy highlighting issues related to discretionary consumption, coronavirus-related reopening and geopolitical events.
Ebay said it expected revenue in its second quarter to fall 7-9 percent from a year ago to $ 2.35- $ 2.4 billion. and for adjusted earnings of 87 to 91 cents per share. This was below the forecasts for a turnover of more than DKK 2.5 billion. USD and an earnings of 1.01 USD per. stock, which analysts wrote in a Refinitive study.
The company also lowered its full-year expectations to levels below market expectations and expected revenue of $ 9.6- $ 9.9 billion. and adjusted earnings of $ 3.90- $ 4.10 per share.
Etsy was in a similar situation. It expected revenue of $ 540 million. to $ 590 million. in its second quarter, which is below Wall Street’s forecast of around $ 628 million.
In aftermarket, Ebay shares fell 6.3 percent and Etsy fell 9.5 percent.
For Ebay and Etsy, the weaker outlook offset first-quarter earnings performance that came slightly above Wall Street forecasts. But they also reinforce concerns that the boost that companies enjoyed during the pandemic as home consumers increased their online shopping has faded.
EBay’s net revenue of $ 2.48 billion. in the first three months of the year fell slightly less than the market expected, while adjusted earnings of $ 1.05 per share were 2 cents better than expected. Etsy’s revenue of $ 579.2 million fell nearly $ 4 million ahead of forecasts, but net income of $ 86.1 million was about $ 3.6 million lower than expected on Wall Street.
