The President of the International Olympic Committee, Thomas Bach, responded to the growing call to postpone Tokyo 2020, insisting that the governing body not “live on another planet.”

The entire sports calendar has been disrupted by the coronavirus crisis, with major events such as Euro 2020 and the Copa America postponed until next summer.

Disruption has also affected many of the qualifying events for the Games – with British boxing qualifications canceled in London and British athletes being told they cannot train at the high performance center in Loughborough unless they already have Olympic qualifying times.

Despite the concerns expressed and the difficulties that concern Athenes, the IOC insists that the games continue as planned.

But Bach emphasizes that they are unaware of the crisis that is enveloping the entire world, and has suggested that other scenarios be considered.

“We are affected by this crisis just like everyone else and we are just like everyone else,” he said in an interview with the New York Times.

“We don’t live in a bubble or on any other planet.

“We are in the middle of our society.”

Bach is not the only figure outraged by his position on the Games.

World Athletics chairman Lord Coe has suggested that the desire to continue with the games is purely financial, stating that athletes will lose money.
