However Bielema additionally doesn’t need that starvation, the chip on the shoulder that disappears after the primary style of success and recognition. Not with opponents like Iowa and Minnesota — two of the Illini’s prime contenders for a Large Ten West championship — subsequent on the schedule. Not with as a lot of a risk that this system can generate buzz across the program on Saturday and additional plow a sensible path to a Large Ten West title.
“It’s my job as a head coach to show our guys about individuals who wish to be round you, they wish to speak to you. However that’s additionally why there’s a cousin creeping on this world known as complacency,” Bielema mentioned Monday. “You simply suppose this stuff are going to occur, and it brings sacrifice out of all of us. With our coaches, our gamers and everybody in Smith Heartthat’s our huge problem.”
Iowa additionally represents an enormous problem on the sphere. Whereas the Hawkeyes offense has struggled mightily (second-worst whole offense within the FBS), the protection (No. 3 within the FBS in scoring protection) and particular groups are top-notch and able to spoiling the Illini’s celebration — as they’ve for therefore many good groups within the current seasons.
Bielema’s workforce appeared to get that message instantly after the win at Wisconsin.
“It’s a pleasant second. But it surely’s one thing we will’t dwell on,” the Illini offensive sort out Alex Palczewski mentioned after beating Wisconsin. “That is one thing that’s regular. We had a great sport plan. Our coaches labored their asses off. We performed our tails off. They’re a great workforce. It’s a pleasant win. We’ll get pleasure from it. However tomorrow we’ve got to Iowa, as a result of that is the brand new norm.”
