“I was cuddling on the toilet at five in the morning”: “Tired” Tyrrell Hatton still feels the effects of his celebrations after winning the Arnold Palmer Invitational, including red wine and “vodka and tequila from the bottle ‘

  • He was Sawgrass on Wednesday prior to the Players Championship

Tyrrell Hatton revealed he is still feeling the effects of his win in the Arnold Palmer Invitational, as he aims to beat his record in another iconic Florida location.

Hatton understandably celebrated well into the night after hitting his first PGA Tour title on Sunday in Bay Hill and has 100 congratulatory WhatsApp messages that remain unopened.

One could well be European Ryder Cup captain Padraig Harrington as Hatton is expected to appear in the biennial game a second consecutive September in September, but the first is this week’s Players Championship in Sawgrass.

“Frankly, I’m still pretty tired, but I was cuddling on the toilet at five in the morning, so it was a good night,” Hatton quipped at his tournament press conference.

“During Sunday night’s celebrations, there was a lot of red wine, and unfortunately I think the finisher drank the vodka and tequila from the bottle, which never ends well. I certainly fell victim to that.

“I still have about 100 unopened WhatsApp messages, the reception was great. I appreciate the large number of people who have sent me a message to say well done. “

Asked if Harrington had been in touch, Hatton added, “I’m not exactly sure who sent a message in that sense, but my schedule hasn’t changed at the moment.

“We have yet to sit down and talk about it, but of course I would like to be on the Ryder Cup team in September and seems to have had a good start to the points race, which is nice. Hopefully I can continue this year and form that team. “

Hatton’s best result in the Players Championship is a 41st draw on his debut in 2017, and the 28-year-old confessed that last year’s missed cut was an example of how his fiery temperament could cost him dearly.

“All week at Bay Hill I managed myself fairly well, which is always one of the hardest things for me,” added world number 22. “I would like to continue that.

“I’m human, so I’m going to make mistakes along the way and there will probably be weeks when I get a bit of a blow, but hopefully there are few in between. Hopefully I can stay cool.

“This week was not normally a good tournament for me. Last year was kind of typical me where I was a shot off the cut line with five more holes to go and got hit, broke my three lumber and basically started shooting shots. I think we missed the cut by five.

“It’s just about making sure I can control myself a bit and that’s usually the first step to a good week for me.”
