Dwyane Wade receives an honorary doctorate from Marquette University
NBA champion and Marquette alumni Dwyane Wade spoke to the university class in 2022, and while sharing the wisdom he gained on his personal journey with the graduates, University President Michael Lovell presented him with an honor of his own.
Dwyane Wade was a Marquette student from 2000-2003 before joining the NBA Draft and his career took off. Wade led the schools’ basketball teams to the last four of his time there, and President Lovell awarded him an honorary doctorate in human letters on Sunday.
Wade’s sister Tragil Wade-Johnson celebrated her achievement in a post on Instagram.
In 2003, he decided to quit his college career and join the NBA Draft. Honestly, as a big sister, I wanted him to stay to get his degree … I felt like I had good reasons. After all my research, the lifespan of a basketball career was not long. “
Despite her doubts, Tragil recalled that he encouraged D. Wade to complete his degree online. When that plan failed and his career as a hooper began to thrive, Tragil said she became discouraged but still wanted Wade to get a degree.
“I would annually ask to submit the request to their board for an honorary bachelor’s degree. And finally, TODAY, I witnessed what I have believed in God for, for 19 years.”
While sharing his advice for Marquette’s graduating class on Sunday, Dwyane Wade referred to some words that Kobe Bryant once shared with him, saying
The times when you get up early and you work hard, the times when you get up late and you work hard, the times when you do not feel like working and you are too tired and you do not want to push yourself, but you do it anyway. It’s actually the dream. It is not the destination, the journey. ”
Dwyane shared his appreciation of the university and faculty in a separate post with the caption “Marquette chose me.”
