Danny Drinkwater could become an outcast in the Premier League after attacking Aston Villa teammate Jota.

Villa discusses ending Chelsea’s loan of Drinking Water after hitting Jota on the head during practice.

However, Villa would need Premier League approval to end the lending period and thus stop paying Drinkwater’s wages, and Sports email understands that officials would be reluctant to allow Villa to prematurely end the deal.

Drinking water is not in Chelsea’s plans, so the prospect of the Blues taking back the midfielder is a long way off.

Even if Villa were to terminate the loan, FIFA rules state that a player can only play for two clubs in one season, and that would mean that Drinkwater could not play this term another game: the 30-year-old former English midfielder played for Burnley when they are on loan there for Christmas.

It leaves Villa the prospect of having to pay for a player who is no longer allowed to play for the club.

One scenario in which Drinkwater could play again this season is when pressured manager Dean Smith leaves and the new boss reintegrates Drinkwater into his team.

With Villa in the relegation zone, Smith is faced with the sack if the results don’t improve.
