Call of Duty: Warzone now has more than 50 million players a month after its launch

Call of Duty: Warzone, the new Battle Royale (BR) mode from developer Infinity Ward, now has over 50 million players, the Activision publishing house announced this on Friday. The milestone, that War zone reaching just a month after its release, the game makes one of the fastest growing free-to-play titles in the game industry. War zone previously scored 30 million players a little less than two weeks after launch.

Unlike Activision’s earlier silly attempt to win a generous title, Black out, which was only made available in 2018 Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, War zone was released as a standalone download on consoles and PC. It doesn’t require players to own other software or pay money to play it, which has greatly boosted its popularity.

War zone now has a significant player base, with approximately 50 million players at roughly the same speed as competing BR games Apex Legends. Fortniteof course has more than 250 million players now, released in late 2017 and now available on consoles, PC and mobile.

Still, the success of Activision and Infinity Ward here illustrates that although the BR genre has lost much of its brilliance since effectively consuming the first-person shooter market three years ago, it still has plenty of room for new ideas and interesting interpretations from the now-trademarked design of these types of games.
