After two years of development, Nightbitch with Amy Adams is ready to howl.

Searchlight has acquired the worldwide rights to the game project and is teaming up with Annapurna on the adaptation of the Rachel Yoder novel, the studio’s arm announced Thursday.

Yoder’s book, published in July 2021 by Doubleday Books, tells the story of a woman who finds herself in a thoughtful and energy-intensive routine of raising a young child in a suburban home while her husband is on long business trips. According to Searchlight, the woman is slowly embracing the wild power that is deeply rooted in motherhood as she becomes more and more aware of the bizarre and indisputable signs that she might be becoming a dog.

The book looked at the pressure women feel to be modern mothers, and the feature project is described as being a dark comic neo-horror. Annapurna acquired the rights to the book in July 2020 and was developing it as a tool for Adams, and later acquired Heller.

Producer is Megan Ellison, Anne Carey (who produced Heller’s A teenage girl’s diary and Can you ever forgive me?), Stacy O’Neil, Christina Oh, Adam Paulsen and Sue Naegle as well as Heller and Adams. Rachel’s dark funny tale of motherhood and rage made me feel seen. And adapting it with Amy Adams in mind has been what has kept me through the pandemic. “

Heller has most recently directed the Mister Rogers drama from 2019, A beautiful day in the neighborhood, which gave Tom Hanks an Oscar nomination. She worked with Searchlight once before, where the company distributed her Can you ever forgive me? Heller is represented by UTA and Johnson Shapiro.
