Amazon continues to play sports with National Women’s Soccer League on Twitch

Twitch is more than just a game streaming platform and Amazon wants to use it as such by bringing more sports games to the platform.
Today, the Women’s National Soccer League announced it would stream 24 of its games on Twitch as part of a three-year deal. The rest of the games are broadcast on CBS, CBS Sports Network and CBS All Access. The games available for free to fans on Twitch are selected games from the regular season of NWSL 2020, according to a press release.
However, Twitch will also serve as the exclusive international partner of the NWSL outside the US. That means that all 108 regular season games, playoffs and championship will be available to global viewers through the Amazon platform. One of the great advantages of Twitch is the interactivity of the platform. Twitch and the NWSL will collaborate on additional competition and player-focused content, including original programming.
“We would also like to partner with Twitch to highlight the brightest stars in the sport,” NWSL Commissioner Lisa Baird said in a press release. “These partnerships will continue to strengthen NWSL and its teams at national and international level.”
Again, the NWSL is just another example in Amazon’s quest for sports dominance. In addition to being the largest esports streaming website in the world, Twitch already streams NBA G League games (the NBA’s official minor league), and National Women’s Hockey League games. The company also announced that Prime Video subscribers in four states would receive 21 free Yankees games this season. The company too streams Thursday Night Football, turned deals to wear Premier League matches in the UK (an important part of the global push), and signed a contract last year to stream a package of hugely popular UEFA Champions League tournament matches in Germany.
