A24 and neon download new films from Cannes

On the other hand, the A24 snatched “Aftersun” by Wells, a Scottish filmmaker whose shorts have previously been shown at Sundance. Her film stars Paul Mescal (“Normal People”) and Frankie Corio (who is brand new to the acting scene) as father and daughter vacationing together in Turkey in the 90s. The film sees their time together through the lens of the now adult daughter, who looks back on her relationship with her father. “Aftersun” is produced by Adele Romanski, Barry Jenkins, Mark Ceryak and Amy Jackson for Unified Theory. As with Östlund’s films, Wells’ debut gets a lot of positive press directly from Cannes, so you can expect these films to be on your watch list over time.

And these are not the only films that have won up so far, Neon’s also grabbed Kore-eda Hirokazu’s drama “Broker” and Mark Jenkins’ horror “Enys Men”. It’s an exciting time of year if you’re interested in movies and industry news, and hey, it’s never too early to start making lists of movies you want to see. Hunting for a movie that is not available outside the festival circuit is half the fun.
