A submarine faces a shark underwater and takes it away with just one hand
Dubai, United Arab Emirates (CNN) – Have you ever asked yourself how you would react if you encountered a tiger shark? While some people think their lives are at stake, the submarine Andriana Fragola offers some steps that can be taken to keep this predator out of the way.
In a video posted on Instagram, Fragola is shown redirecting a tiger shark as it approaches it, on the north coast of Oahu, Hawaii.
Fragola, a marine conservation biologist, explained that the tiger shark is not aggressive, but was curious to know its identity.
Fragola has been working with this type of shark for about 4 years, and has been able to get to know them really well during this time.
And if you have ever thought about directing tiger sharks, if you come across them, it should not be done by an ordinary person who has no experience handling these sea creatures.
Although sharks are not considered man-eating monsters, they are still marine predators.
And you should only redirect the tiger shark when it keeps getting close to you, which is a very rare situation.
To keep a tiger shark away, first maintain eye contact and confront it.
If you do this and the tiger shark is still approaching you, you can extend your fin in its direction to create a barrier.
After this point, if the shark is still coming towards you, the next thing you want to do is keep your body vertical and face the shark again.
When you get close, stretch your arm completely out and rest it firmly on top of the shark’s head.
And be sure to press on the top of the fish’s head, not the front or bottom of the nose, as this can cause the shark’s jaw to open, something you certainly do not want to happen.
After doing this, be sure to continue pushing along the shark’s head and body to keep some distance between you. At this point, get out of the water as quickly as possible without rushing away and looking at the prey.
And keep looking around to make sure the tiger shark or other sharks do not come close again.
This method is mostly useful with tiger sharks in particular because other species of small sharks are usually more sensitive to this type of touch and do not respond well.
And it can be very dangerous to redirect a tiger shark because you put your hands near the animal’s head and mouth.
Of course, this area can cause some damage if you do not know the correct position of the hand, or are not properly trained.
“I would never advise people to try to seek out these types of interactions without proper guidance, out of respect for sharks as a large predator,” Fragola told CNN Arabic.
As for people’s reactions, some are inspired and impressed to see how amazing these fearsome creatures can be and how to interact with them in a peaceful way, while others ask not to touch the creatures in this way.
Touch is absolutely crucial in these situations to keep the diver safe and the tiger shark safe, Fragula explains.
Andriana is fortunate to have grown up near the ocean when she lived in Miami, Florida.
She tended to dive and explore the depths of the water since her childhood until she became a certified submarine in open water.
When she is underwater, Fragola feels inner peace, making her more connected to the sea.
“I have always had such a deep love for the sea from a young age that I have spent more time in the water, on a boat or on the beaches than on land,” said the biologist.
