6 MCU Cameos, no so come
The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is full of endless possibilities. Beginning over a decade ago with Iron Manit is unlikely that anyone could have foreseen where we would be today. The Infinity Saga may have interwoven with beloved heroes and villains from many franchises, but fans are still taken by surprise by guest appearances and cameos.
Now that the multiverse is officially underway, debates about who the next big face to appear are always a talk for fans. Whether it’s an actor repeating a role from a previous Marvel movie, a variant of an established character or just a brand new person, MCU keeps things quiet.
JK Simmons – ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’
Fans of Spider Man could rejoice and cheer as J. Jonah Jameson makes his surprising appearance at the end of Spider-Man: Far from home. It’s even more satisfying to see the clever, loud Daily Bugle editor return because he’s played by JK Simmonswho especially created the role for his own with Sam Raimi Spider Man trilogy.
Prior to the release of this sequel, speculations and theories about the MCU’s introduction to the multiverse were going wild. The arrival of Jake Gyllenhaal‘s Mysterio only added fire to the fuel. However, nothing is set in stone until the mid-credit scene, which shows J. Jonah Jameson sending to New York City with a notorious disgust against Spider-Man. His presence confirms the beginnings of Marvel knitting in multiverse theory, leaving it open to more familiar faces who may re-enter the franchise.
Elon Musk – ‘Iron Man 2’
Iron Man 2 is packed with action, Easter eggs and surprising cameos – fans can even remember the future Marvel star Kate Mara meet Tony (Robert Downey Jr.). Another famous face that meets the billionaire genius is Elon Muskwhich is often compared to being the real equivalent of Tony Stark.
It is almost fitting that Tony would have connections to well-known CEOs in hindsight. The duo appear to be on excellent footing with each other, though Musk is only seen in one scene. This is a great way to showcase Tony’s philanthropic reach and is a fun little nod to pull the real world into the MCU.
Kenneth Branagh – ‘Avengers: Infinity War’
Kenneth Branagh leads an impressive career that spans four decades! At Branagh, entertainment is almost a guarantee, even the times he works with his magic behind the lens; the British actor and filmmaker dives into the MCU by directing the first chapter of Thor, the fourth film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
However, his commitment to Marvel does not end there. Nearly seven years later, Branagh returns to the superhero series and lends his voice to The Russo brothers in the 2018s Avengers: Infinity War. It’s short, but fans can hear Branagh shouting the Asgardian distress signal at the very beginning of the film. It’s a nice touch to include in the franchise. Branagh’s efforts at Marvel begin with the mighty Nordic god and end (presumably) with the Northerner; we just have to wait and see if the British actor and filmmaker will make another comeback.
Matt Damon, Luke Hemsworth and Sam Neill – ‘Thor: Ragnarok’
That Thor series takes a leaf out of Guardians of the Galaxy and switches up to a more tongue-in-cheek installment with Taika Waititi’s Thor: Ragnarok. Thor (Chris Hemsworth), along with the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), is generally considered the team muscle; he may be happily ignorant, but it’s funny enough. Like Hemsworth’s approach to character Thor: Ragnarok doing something seriously funny with himself.
The cheerfulness of an unexpected moment comes from Matt Damon, Sam Neilland Hemsworth’s real brother, Luke Hemsworth. The trio portrays actors on Asgard and performs a performance that mimics Thor’s life. While Damon and Neill play fictional stories about Loki and Odin, the older Hemsworth jumps into his brother’s shoes. Damon is largely known for cameos at this point, and it makes sense for Luke Hemsworth to intervene in the leading man, but it gives viewers a moment of frivolous disbelief. Their respective guest seats add the comic tone of the third chapter.
Charlize Theron – ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’
One of the most recent theatrical applause moments at MCU is Illuminati’s debut in Doctor Strange in the multiverse of madness. Yet their introductions are no doubt overshadowed by another comic counterpart that emerges. There are several figures whose entrances have managed to be kept as a total surprise until the moment calls for it, and among the herd are Charlize Theronis Clea.
Clea is a strong sorceress from the dark dimension; her mid-credit cameo launches her engagement with MCU as she enlists the help of Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch). It already looks like Clea will be an integral part of future films – fans of the comics will remember her connection to Doctor Strange and what it could mean for his journey. Expectations are high for upcoming additions to Phase Four, especially the following Spider-Man: No Way Home. Multiverse of madness does his best to maintain his list of stars and for the most part only manages to tease voice-overs and artillery in the trailer.
Brad Pitt – ‘Deadpool 2‘
Technically Deadpool movies are not officially part of MCU (yet at least), but how many people actually saw this cameo coming? What starts as a humorous gag over an invisible ally turns into one of the most bizarre surprise appearances in Marvel’s history.
Given his lack of visual presence, The Vanisher’s screen time is in Deadpool 2 is virtually non-existent. No one could have ever suspected that he would be portrayed by Hollywood royalty. The Vanisher joins Wades (Ryan Reynolds) X-Force team to protect Russell (Julian Dennison) from cable (Josh Brolin) attack. But like the other members of the X-Force, Domino wore (Zazie Beetz), he is killed in a comic way and his identity is revealed – played by none other than Brad Pitt. His performance is literally a blink-and-miss-it moment, but it’s an extremely memorable shot.
