Woman yelling at barista in feud with face mask wants half of his $ 100K ‘tip’

The California woman whose viral Facebook post wanted to shame a Starbucks barista for refusing to serve her for not wearing a mask has been counterproductive and has sparked a massive fundraiser and is now trying to reap the benefits.

Amber Lynn Gilles, a yoga instructor, photographer and self-proclaimed anti-vaxxer, took to Facebook on June 22 to blame the barista – identified as Lenin Gutierrez – for denying her service at a Starbucks in San Diego.

Meet borrow [sic] from Starbucks who refused to serve me because I don’t wear a mask, “she said in the post, tagging the coffee shop by Genesee Avenue’s 4200 block.

The post, which was removed after making numerous negative comments to Gilles, inspired an alien, Matt Cowan, from Irvine, to launch a GoFundMe campaign for Gutierrez to tip him for his job.

In an interview with ABC10 This week, Cowan said when he launched the campaign, titled “Tips for Lenin Standing Up to a San Diego Karen,” he never expected the support that followed to grow.

“I set it at $ 1,000 thinking it was a range, but we’d be lucky if we hit $ 250 and when we hit $ 100 I was overwhelmed,” Cowan said.

By the end of Friday afternoon, the fundraiser has received over $ 104,000 in donations.

New York Times reported that in an interview last weekend, Gilles said she wants at least half of all proceeds from the online campaign “because they use me to get it.”

She continued, “they use my name, they use my face, and they slander me.”

Gilles has also threatened to sue Cowan, alleging slander and slander.

The post prompted Matt Cowan to found the GoFundMe for Gutierrez, whom he did not know. The two have been in communication and have plans to meet, with the barista (photo) Cowan sending multiple videos and messages thanking his supporters

Meanwhile, Gutierrez told ABC10 that he plans to use the money to pursue a university degree in kinesiology – the study of movement – and to donate to charity.

“Everything I wanted to do seemed far away, but with everything that’s going on, it seems more within my reach,” he said. “Everyone showed my kindness, so now I want to give it back.”

The plan is for Gutierrez to receive the money from the fundraiser sometime next week.

Under the mandate of the Governor of California, Gavin Newsom regarding facial coverings, people can be exempted from wearing masks in public, but must state a medical reason.

“I’m not scared or bothered by your ignorant fraud a ** s, I’m not sorry your losers have nothing better to do,” she said last week. “Thanks for the reviews, you all act like the terrorist organization you are.”

To talk with NBC San Diego days later, Gilles denied the ever-threatening Gutierrez.

“I just called him about his actions,” said the 35-year-old mother of three. “I never threatened him and I threatened death, thousands, it’s very disturbing. It is very scary. ‘

Gilles, who is against vaccinations, argued that forcing people to wear masks is a slippery slope.

“It starts with coffee, but it ends with mandatory digital certificates, the mark of the beast and all those forced vaccinations,” she said.

Gutierrez posted a video on his Facebook page showing his side of the story. He said he asked Gilles if she had a face mask, to which she reportedly replied that she didn’t need one.

“Before I could say anything, she sent me away and said I didn’t need one and started cursing a storm,” he said. “She started calling people sheep and she left and came back in a few minutes and she asked for my name and took a picture.”

Starbucks has released a statement explaining the need to wear masks in stores.

“We want everyone to feel welcome in our stores,” they said in a statement CBS 8. “We respectfully ask customers to follow the social distance and safety protocols recommended by public health officials, including wearing a face cover when they visit our stores.
