By 2024, Wawa, a popular East Coast convenience store and gas station chain, is expected to have opened its first store in North Carolina, the company confirmed Friday.

After seeing the news from WSOC’s Joe Bruno, I immediately texted my Wawa-obsessed friend in Charlotte with the good news. Not even a full second later: “Holy f – k,” he said. “Can you quote that?”

Why it matters: Y’all have been begging for a Wawa in the Carolinas for years. It’s a piece of home that northern transplants like myself miss most.

The big picture: The Pennsylvania-based company has about 1,000 convenience stores and gas stations across the mid-Atlantic region and Florida.

  • It has a cult-like following for its hoagies, mac and cheese and beverages, like peach tea.

What’s happening: We do not have details on the specific location or timeline for North Carolina’s first Wawa, but a representative tells me, “We are actively looking into potential sites for new Wawa stores in the state.”

Yes, but: Who will get the first Wawa – Charlotte or Raleigh?

  • There’s only one right answer here.

The bottom line: Wawa is coming, but we’ll have to wait for more details.
