Twitter disables video in Trump retweet after Linkin Park files a copyright complaint

Twitter confirmed it removed a campaign video that President Trump retweeted on Saturday over a copyright complaint. Linkin Park’s song “ In the End ” was in the background of the video, featuring images of President Trump and excerpts from his inauguration speech.

“Per our copyright policy, we respond to valid copyright complaints sent to us by the copyright owner or its authorized representative, “said a Twitter spokesperson in an email to The edge on Sunday.

The band tweeted on Saturday that it was pursuing a “cease and desist” and that it had not allowed its use in the video: “Linkin Park did not approve or approve of Trump.”

The copyright notice has been placed with the non-profit transparency initiative Lumen database.

Dan Scavino, deputy chief of staff at the White House, tweeted the video Friday night, and President Trump’s official Twitter retweeted this Saturday. The retweet is no longer visible on the President’s Twitter feed, however Scavino’s original tweet is still live from Sunday morning (minus the video).

It’s not the first time Twitter has taken action against any of Trump’s tweets over a copyright complaint. Last month, it ran a four-minute campaign video featuring images of George Floyd, the Minneapolis man who died on May 25 after a policeman knelt in the neck. Facebook and Instagram removed posts from their platforms with the video. The president called the removal “illegal” in a tweet, but Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey responded: “Not true and not illegal. This has been removed because we received a DMCA complaint from the copyright holder. ‘

Trump has other tweets flagged by Twitter that he says violate his content policy. In May, the social media platform added a label to a tweet where Trump warned “when the looting begins, the shooting begins,” because Twitter said the tweet violated its policy against glorifying violence. A June tweet from the President with a fake video was labeled “manipulated media.”

The Trump campaign did not immediately return a request for comment on Sunday.
