True lies was incredibly amazing. The 1994 action comedy was in itself an adaptation of the 1991 French film The whole thing! Combines Arnie’s comic timing with James Cameron’s eye for technical detail, with good supportive twists from Jamie Lee Curtis, Tom Arnold, Art Malik, Tia Carrere and Bill Paxton. It even has a Charlton Heston cameo. It remains hugely fun.
For years, there has been a sequel, even while an official Blu-Ray or high def transfer remains elusive. Tom Arnold in particular talked about a successor for two decades.
Like all things that fit in the parenthesis “much loved”, it was with some concern when we heard that it was being remade. Not just remade, but remade into TV. And not for a big streamer, but for network TV. This thing was just full of “uh-oh!”
Now, CBS is premiering the trailer for the TV series based on the movie, so we can see if our fears were well-founded.
It follows the same basic plot. Harry (Steve Howey) is a first-class international spy for a US intelligence service called the Omega Sector. Helen (Ginger Gonzaga) is his wife, a professor who has been frustrated by her husband’s frequent absences. Soon she learns the truth and she is hired to join Harry’s elite team of spies, which adds a much-needed spark to their marriage.
Looks like they’re gone where the sequel was supposed to go, which should include Jamie-Lee Curtis’ wife character who joined the team at Omega Sector.
Our verdict from the trailer. Could have been worse, has the potential to go both ways.
Erica Hernandez, Omar Miller, Mike O’Gorman, Annabella Didion and Lucas Jaye star in True lies who has Burning message boss Matt Nix as both showrunner and writer. Anthony Hemingway directed the pilot and acts as executive producer alongside James Cameron.
