Tour de France: Simon Clarke wins stage 5 as Pogacar makes assertion – because it occurred | Tour de France
Key occasions:
That shall be all for in the present day. The cobbles definitely delivered additional nervousness within the peloton and further pleasure for Tour de France followers all over the place – though essentially the most vital moments of the race occurred off the cobbled sectors.
The apparently fearless Tadej Pogacar has taken a stranglehold on the overall classification following one other distinctive efficiency, by which he rode extra like a Classics strong-man than a a number of grand tour winner. Simon Clarke of Israel-Premier Tech, in the meantime, produced a shocking stage win with a mix of sheer exhausting work within the breakaway and a little bit of tactical crafty within the “remaining”.
Daniel Harris has tennis motion from Wimbledon for you, proper right here. Bye for now.
Sounds … painful?

Or did he? (Put his personal shoulder again in, that’s.)
Primož Roglič confirms he dislocated his shoulder in that crash and the crew needed to pop it again in. He’s set to proceed. #TDF2022

Learn Jeremy Whittle’s stage 5 report from Arenberg:
Luke Rowe speaks to ITV: “It was a chaotic day … I feel for us, possibly we uncovered ourselves a little bit bit early … It was simply crash after crash after crash … we have been in a sticky scenario at one level and by the sounds of it, we owe Wout van Aert a beer.
“Lots of the successful strikes in these [cobbled] races occur on the tarmac, on the asphalt. You discuss concerning the cobbles and it’s only a battle for place to enter them. When you’re there it’s exhausting to maneuver up and also you don’t lose an excessive amount of floor both … it’s combating for pinch factors going into the entrance of the peloton in the direction of them sections.”
It’s being reported that Roglic has dislocated his shoulder. What a horrible day it’s been for Jumbo-Visma.
A few attention-grabbing factors being raised within the discussions on Eurosport: One, Jumbo-Visma’s points highlighted the issue of getting two GC leaders, as they didn’t appear certain what to do or who to assist when issues arrived.
Secondly, they’re questioning why Bettiol was pulling on the entrance of the peloton on the cobbles when there have been two EF-Training Easypost riders within the breakway.
High 10 GC after stage 5
1) Wout Van Aert (Jumbo-Visma): 16 hr 17’ 22”
2) Neilson Powless (EF Training-Easypost) +13”
3) Edvald Boasson Hagen (TotalEnergies) +14”
4) Tadej Pogacar (UAE Staff Emirates) +19”
5) Yves Lampaert (Fast-Step Alpha Vinyl) +25”
6) Pedersen (Trek-Segafredo) +36”
7) Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma)
8) Adam Yates (Ineos) +48”
9) Pidcock (Ineos) +49”
10) Thomas (Ineos) +50”
Van der Hoorn, overwhelmed by an inch or so, has a chat with Bernie Eisel on Eurosport, who asks how he’s feeling: “Shit. Actually shit. So shut. I virtually received a Tour stage. Yeah, disappointment.
“I had this plan to go within the break right here, I did a full recon, additionally initially, I knew there was a narrowing after 1km … we had a excessive velocity consistently all day. The bunch was extra busy with getting their principal guys within the entrance, then chasing again the break … I knew there was an opportunity in the present day and we did actually good teamwork with the blokes in entrance. Perhaps Simon was sooner, I simply made small errors, after which it’s gone.”
He seems devastated and you may perceive why. Little question he could have extra probabilities on this race, however maybe nothing fairly that good.
Right this moment’s winner, Simon Clarke, speaks: “After the winter after I had after I had no crew, to have Israel-Premier Tech ring me up, to offer me that likelihood … it offers you a actuality verify to profit from each alternative [when you don’t have a contract].
“You’ve seen in each race [this season], I’ve come out swinging, and attempting to profit from each alternative. The levels I’ve received within the Vuelta have been all within the first week, in these first levels, so I believed, possibly in the present day’s the day.
“I nonetheless can’t imagine I received it on the road there … I used to be cramping in each legs. I lined up the most important [bike] throw I may probably do, and hoped it was sufficient. Actually, I want to observe the replay, I nonetheless don’t fairly imagine it.
“I moved to Europe after I was 16, and I’m 36 on the second relaxation day, so it’s been 20 years, and in the present day a dream got here true.”
He describes his considering within the remaining kilometre: “Even when Powless attacking, you’ve received to take a seat again, and pray the opposite guys panic earlier than you do. I gave Edvald a little bit of house, to let him get the bounce on me, and he took the bait, and I actually needed to chase him exhausting …
“Hey to everybody in Australia – thanks for all of the help – and I hope I did you proud tonight.”
Good stuff and attention-grabbing perception on how he raced the ultimate kilometre, too. Clarke has additionally received two Vuelta levels, the mountains classification on the Vuelta, and a TTT stage at each the Tour and the Giro. That can certainly be essentially the most particular win of all of them?
Has Pogacar received this wrapped up, barring mishaps?
GC contenders dropping like cupboard ministers.

That was some experience by all of the six males within the preliminary breakaway. And for Simon Clarke, who was with out a contract a couple of months in the past, it’s a fairly superb achievement. The drama of the ultimate kilometre was exhausting to beat, when it regarded like Powless has it sewn up, earlier than Boasson Hagen regarded odds on to win … Van der Hoorn was then within the field seat however Clarke managed to remain on his wheel, and now he has his first stage win on the Tour de France! Excellent.
Stage 5, prime three:
Simon Clarke (Israel-Premier Tech) 3hr 13’ 15”
Taco van der Hoorn (Intermarché–Wanty–Gobert Matériaux) +0”
Neilson Powless (EF Training-Easypost) +2sec
Simon Clarke (Israel–Premier Tech) wins stage 5!
Insane end. Powless goes early, with a splash for the end from 1km to go. He’s overhauled by Boasson Hagen with round 400m remaining, who in flip fades earlier than the road. Van der Hoorn and Clarke come previous the Norwegian, and Van der Hoorn seems to have received it, however Clarke simply pips him on the road after managing to draft behind him.
The 35-year-old veteran throws his bike for the road and he wins it by a few inches! The result’s confirmed in a photograph end. Superb.
1km to go: Powless assaults early! Nobody follows! He seems like it could have this within the bag!
1.5km to go: Jack Haig (Bahrain Victorious) was one in all in the present day’s casualties.
4km to go: Magnus Cort is dropped on the ultimate cobbled sector! I feel Gougeard has dropped out of the lead group, too, which leaves Powless, Boasson Hagen, Van der Hoorn and Clarke. 4 riders who’re going to battle it out for the stage win.
6km to go: It’s tough to work out precisely who’s the place with all of the completely different teams on the street … however the headline is that Pogacar is ready to take an iron grip on the GC battle, a bit like Nibali in 2014. He has not been afraid to take a couple of dangers and it seems prefer it’s going to repay.
9km to go: I feel the six riders up entrance are going to make it. The very last thing they need is a bike owner with a dash like Stuyven coming again. So they’re working doubly exhausting to offer themselves an opportunity of a stage win.
As for the GC, nicely, it’s honest to say that the race organiser’s want to inject into pleasure into the primary week has been granted.
Roglic, I ought to level out, seems to be on his personal and three minutes down, based on the letour.fr web site.
10km to go: There are no less than six completely different teams on the street. That is everywhere. The breakaway’s lead has elevated once more, to round 46”.
12km remaining: Is Primoz Roglic’s GC race over already? Onerous to see him making up three minutes or so on Pogacar. And he made find yourself shedding greater than that.
15km to go: Cort powers on on the entrance. “Pogacar is absolutely placing his authority on this race,” observes Sean Kelly. The Jumbo-Visma riders are pictured working collectively and attempting to get Roglic again in contact with the primary group.
16km to go: A Lotto Soudal rider loses it on a nook and veers into the gang. Roglic is standing to lose practically three minutes to Pogacar for the time being, if it stays the identical.
18km to go: Brandon McNulty (UAE Staff Emirates) veers off to the facet of a cobbled lane simply earlier than a right-hand bend. He stays upright … In the meantime Stuyven and Pogacar have now becoming a member of forces to and pull again the escape group. If Stuyven is there on the finish in a dash end between a small group, he’d should fancy his probabilities.
20km to go: Pogacar, who seems fearsomely robust as ordinary, is now taking it up for the chasing group. He appears to be with out teammates however that by no means bothers him. He’s driving the tempo as a result of he sees an opportunity to place a while into his GC rivals.
Nonetheless, the six-man break should not hanging round, they’re working exceptionally nicely collectively and holding the hole at simply over a minute.
22km to go: There are actually three cobbled sectors remaining for the breakaway riders: Tilloy-lez-Marchiennes à Sars-et-Rosières, Bousignies à Millonfosse and the d’Hasnon à Wallers.
Because it stands, Pogacar could also be going into the yellow jersey. It’s been a horrible day for Jumbo-Visma if it stays like this, as they are going to lose the jersey and their GC guys will lose time, too.
25km to go: The breakaway riders aren’t giving up on this. They’re driving “via and off”, taking turns to prepared the ground and attempting to work collectively as successfully as attainable to attempt to make it to the end.
27km to go: Bettiol is chasing on the entrance of the peloton for EF Training-Easypost … although they’ve two riders within the break. That’s a little bit of an odd one. Anyway, the hole between the entrance group and the six-rider break has fallen, in a short time, to 58”.
Huge crash for Caleb Ewan … and Roglic in there
30km to go: The breakaway nonetheless has 1’45” to play with. Caleb Ewan (Lotto Soudal) crashes whereas in the primary bunch! I feel one other couple of riders went down, too. There was a chunk of a barrier that had gone into the street which is what precipitated the crash. It was troublesome to see however the commentators reckoned Primoz Roglic went down, too …
33km to go: Nils Pollitt (Bora–Hansgrohe), the German nationwide champion and an absolute powerhouse, is pictured driving on the entrance of the primary bunch. Pogacar, who appears to be missing help from his teammates, is calmly driving alongside behind him.
Van Aert drops again to his crew automobile. He’s out of rivalry for the stage win in the present day, that’s for certain.
35km to go: An enormous downside for Jonas Vingegaard, who I feel had a mechanical … it seems like he initially grabbed a motorcycle off a teammate which was too large for him. He then nabbed Kruijswijk’s bike, however virtually instantly dropped it when he noticed a crew automobile developing behind.
“That may be a panic scenario,” says Sean Kelly.
38km to go: Van de Poel is dropped by the primary bunch! He stated this morning he wasn’t feeling nice, though he isn’t sick, both. Anyway, this appears to be one other day when he’s received empty legs. Being a Classics specialist, he was excessive on the record for many individuals for a winner in the present day.
Anyway, the hole between peloton and break is now 2’07 … and as I sort it falls to 2’00”. Are these six riders up entrance operating out of steam a little bit?
39km to go: In response to letour.fr, Pidcock of Staff Ineos is within the dropped group of riders with O’Connor. In response to Eurosport simply then, he’s in the primary bunch. I don’t know the place he’s, at this stage.
40km to go: “Little cobbles story for you,” emails Aodhan Toland. “Pedalled out of Arras after watching the beginning of the 2018 stage to Roubaix. Realised I used to be at risk of lacking the race so put the foot down on the cobbles, when my body snapped. Hammered on regardless and ultimately reached a race sector with everybody beginning to pack up…I’d simply missed the race. Then a cry of “Clear the street!” went up and two stragglers got here via miles off the again. Nonetheless counts!”
A traditional Tour de France spectating story … honest play for efficiently driving a snapped body!
41km to go: Ben O’Connor (AG2R Citroën) is among the many group of dropped riders: Tom Pidcock, Bauke Mollema, Jack Haig, Mikael Cherel, Franck Bonnamour, Giulio Ciccone, Luke Rowe and Man Niv are the others.
45km to go: The breakaway is on the fourth sector at d’Auberchicourt à Émerchicourt. When it comes to negotiating these cobbled sectors safely, all is nicely for the GC groups up to now, and certainly these groups merely concentrating on a stage win in the present day.
Some riders select to take the surface strains on the cobbles, some are selecting to remain within the center … it’s dusty however I feel the riders would slightly that than rain.
47km to go: One key distinction between in the present day and the precise Paris-Roubaix, in fact, is that the race doesn’t end on the well-known velodrome.
In the meantime, Florian Sénéchal (Fast-Step Alpha Vinyl) has a puncture, and it seems that Luke Rowe (Staff Ineos) has an issue of some kind, too.
48km to go: Because the bunch hits the newest sector of cobbles, riders are compelled up on to the grassy banks on both sides, such is the narrowing of the street compared to the traditional roads they often race on. It’s a heat, dry day and mud is being kicked up by all of the tyres and all of the autos on the street.
50km to go: In response to Rob Hatch on Eurosport, Chris Froome and Peter Sagan have each been dropped. That got here through race radio.
51km to go: The tempo remains to be very, very popular. The principle bunch all negotiated the second cobbled sector with none obvious issues. The break hits the third cobbled sector, at Wasnes-au-Bac à Marcq-en-Ostrevent, which has a problem score of three stars.
53km to go: Asgreen takes it up for Fast-Step Alpha Vinyl on the cobbles, splitting off the entrance of the bunch with a teammate.
54km to go: EF Training Easypost will need to have began dreaming concerning the yellow jersey to go along with Magnus Cort’s polka-dots, given this present scenario. I fancy it’s going to be fairly exhausting for the peloton to scale back this hole.
56km to go: The peloton is fanned out throughout the street behind the break – which has a bonus of three’26” for the time being … and the breakaway hits the second sector of cobbles! The entry to the sector is downhill. That’s probably going to be a bit spicy in three minutes or so when the bunch will get there … and the street narrows massively because the cobbles begin.
62km to go: Sector 10 (counting all the way down to 1) is d’Eswars à Paillencourt. The riders shall be hitting it shortly.
64km to go: To recap, the riders within the break are:
Neilson Powless and Magnus Cort (EF Training–EasyPost)
Simon Clarke (Israel-Premier Tech)
Alexis Gougeard (B&B Resorts – KTM)
Taco van der Hoorn (Intermarché–Wanty–Gobert)
Edvald Boasson Hagen (TotalEnergies)
Powless is the best-placed in GC, over a minute down, and because of this he’s the digital chief of the Tour de France for the time being.
65km to go: Following that first cobbled sector there’s a lengthy stretch of tarmac street earlier than they hit the second sector. The common velocity for in the present day is nonetheless hovering over 50kmm/h. Robbie McEwen, on commentary for Eurosport, fancies the break has a superb likelihood of constructing it now, with a spot of three’20” and 65km to race. We’ll see.
70km to go: A photograph right here of the second that Van Aert was very practically taken out by a DSM crew automobile:
74km to go: Cobbles! The primary of 11 sectors is Fressain à Villers-au-Tertre. Alberto Bettiol (EF Training Easypost) is driving on the entrance. Just a few moments in the past Sagan (TotalEnergies) and Vegard Stake Laengen (UAE Staff Emirates) had a crash on a nook, simply earlier than the cobbles started, however I feel they’re OK. All of the riders seem to have negotiated the primary cobbled sector safely …
77 km to go: “Re: your request for cobbles anecdotes,” emails Josh Bax. “I used to be roadside for the Roubaix stage in 2018 on Mons-en-Pévèle, one of many five-star sectors. My overwhelming reminiscence is the warmth and the mud that kicked up. The air was thick with mud as the whole lot went previous – the riders should battle with all of it of their lungs!
“And I feel there have been 4 or 5 helicopters overhead … That day will at all times stick with me – such a stress cooker and harsh surroundings. Image hooked up of Matthew Hayman throughout that stage.”
Thanks for getting in contact, Josh.
80km to go: Motion stations on the entrance of the peloton. The hole to the break is as much as 4’00” because the six riders up entrance push on … and behind them, in the primary bunch, the riders are everywhere in the street because the tempo and the nervousness picks up. The cobbles are approaching.
88km to go: Up entrance, the hole between the six-man break and the peloton is 3’36”. Van Aert is sort of again with the primary group, he’s solely about 10” behind them now.
91km to go: I didn’t see it on the TV however on Eurosport, Daniel Lloyd says the race commissaires have made it clear to Van Aert and Kruijswijk that they not allowed to make use of their crew automobile to draft again on to the primary bunch … and the subsequent second, Van Aert is driving proper behind a Staff DSM automobile … the automobile driver touches his brakes, and Van Aert practically collides with the automobile, however manages to twist his physique and bike away from it, and edges previous it by a few inches! That was a detailed one …
95km to go: Wout van Aert, the general race chief, crashes! He’s again on his bike and he seems OK for now. He will get a brand new bike and is driving again to get in contact with the peloton. It was on an extended right-hander exiting a roundabout – from the replays it regarded like riders in entrance of him touched their brakes and Van Aert had nowhere to go.
He has 55” to make up to be able to get again to the primary peloton. He’s with Steven Kruijswijk, who additionally appeared to go down in that crash. That isn’t the sort of incident you want in case you’re attempting to guard the yellow jersey and possibly win a second consecutive stage.
96km to go: Tadej Pogacar had a chat with Bernie Eisel of Eurosport earlier than the stage: “The stress earlier than the cobbles is a bit worrying however I’ve a good condition, and I feel if there isn’t any again luck, it ought to all be going nicely. You’ll want to experience a superb place, it’s good to experience the cobbles fairly good, it’s good to discover one of the best line … however even on the [normal] street you may get a puncture from a small rock.
“I feel it’s a fairly robust problem [to get the yellow jersey today] … There’s going to be a race in the present day, and I’m going to take part in it, and I’ll give it my finest.”
Spot the gendarmerie.
103km to go: My private expertise of driving cobbles was on the Tour of Flanders sportive in 2019. I discovered the quick, flat cobbled sections very uncomfortable, whereas the enduring climbs alongside the route have been superb by comparability. It takes a sure method to experience rapidly and easily over flat cobbled sections, and it’s undoubtedly not one which I’ve developed. Fortunately the professionals shall be taking good care of it in the present day.
Electronic mail me your cobbles-riding anecdotes, why don’t you?
106km to go: The quickest estimated time schedule on the official Tour de France web site is calculated at a 47km/h common velocity. The present precise common velocity is 51.7km/h. It’s protected to imagine the cobbles will take the sting of that tempo to a sure extent, nevertheless.
