Warning! Spoilers ahead too Obi-Wan # 1
In Marvel and Star wars‘ new Obi-Wan series, the titular Jedi Master proves that he knows Tatooine better than the Tusken Raiders. Taken place in previous years A new hope, Obi-Wan is waiting for a brutal sandstorm that has overtaken the region, writing in his diaries and reflecting on his life. The beginning of the number, however, shows that Obi-Wan knew well in advance that the storm was on its way, picking up on signs that the native sand people could only dream of.
Choosing to Protect Young Luke Skywalker After the Events in Sithens revenge, Obi-Wan took the name Ben and became a hermit on Tatooine for 19 years. During that time, Obi-Wan got used to life in the desert world, where he lived in Jundland Wastes and kept an eye on the young Skywalker from a distance due to Luke’s uncle Owen’s disapproval. Now, the new Obi-Wan # 1 from Christopher Cantwell and Ario Anindito proves how good a Tatooine survivalist Kenobi really was.
In the new issue, Obi-Wan reveals that although the region may look clear in the now, he can feel the massive sandstorm approaching fast anyway. Not only has he learned to see, hear and feel the signs as the eerie quiet and small changes in the wind, but Kenobi can also feel the storm coming through the Force as a dark shadow intending to claim the region. As such, it seems that being a Jedi with Force abilities provides an impressive advantage over the nomadic Tusken Raiders.
It should be noted that the Tusken Raiders are born and often die in the deserts of Tatooine without ever leaving them. As a result, the tribes of the sand people have perfected how they survive and prepare for sandstorms as it is a regular occurrence. That said, the time Obi-Wan has to prepare via Force gives him a unique leg that the Tusken Raiders of Tatooine simply does not. The fact that the Jedi can feel the storm while inside its hut as a “wave of darkness“ also proves that the force is still his ally under his isolation.
The majority of this new series will look back on previously undiscovered moments from Obi-Wan’s story, while the Jedi await the brutal sandstorm by writing in its diaries. However, it would still be exciting to see more of Kenobi’s time on Tatooine in future issues. In one way or another, Star wars fans will just have to wait and see who the Marvels are Obi-Wan continues.
