Maverick is certified fresh with an almost perfect score on rotten tomatoes

By comparison, 2022’s most lucrative release to date, “The Batman”, has a rating of 85% on Rotten Tomatoes, and it’s the best RT score of any major domestic ticket hit this year. Among the rest of the year’s top five biggest films, “The Lost City” has a critical score of 79%, while “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” is at 74%. “Sonic the Hedgehog 2” was positively reviewed by 68% of the critics, and “Uncharted” ended with 41%. Critics are significantly more gaga over “Top Gun: Maverick” than any of the year’s most lucrative films to date, and the film also looks set to win big among audiences. In a cinema landscape that is unstable at best, this sounds like a pretty resounding victory for everyone involved.

“Top Gun: Maverick” follows a new group of fighter pilot recruits as they train under Captain Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Cruise), who still stubbornly stays in the sky and avoids his superiors’ attempts to give him a job on the ground. Among them is Lieutenant Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw (Miles Teller), son of Maverick’s deceased bestie Nick “Goose” Bradshaw (played by Anthony Edwards in the original 1986 film).

It took Cruise over 30 years to buckle back into the F-18 for one last ride, but it sounds like the actor persevered after a sequel that honors the original in every way while presenting a new side of a familiar story. “The film acts as a Maverick-like rebellion against the very concept of time,” Ben Pearson writes in his / her film review, “and a celebration of Cruise’s continued commitment to risking his life on screen for our entertainment.”

“Top Gun: Maverick” will hit theaters on May 27, 2022. Featured locations also offer early screenings on May 24, 2022.
