Lionel Messi admitted that “everything will be weird” when LaLiga resumes after the coronavirus pandemic, but insisted that he and his teammates in Barcelona take advantage of the forced break.
The Barcelona captain has not played since he scored a late winner on March 7 against Real Sociedad, with Spanish football suspended in the midst of the outbreak and being at the top of the table with two points ahead of Real Madrid with nine games to play.
Messi also gave his opinion on how to resume football safely and which players he believes could improve the Barcelona squad this summer.
Lionel Messi outlined his thoughts on the return of football after the corona virus pandemic
Messi said Sport and Mundo Deportivo: “This break may benefit us in the end, but we’re going to see if they can start the competitions and we’ll get out of that, because we’ll check the level we have or can reach when we start.”
The Argentinian also opened up on how to keep fit, revealing that he feels ‘very well’ feeling at home with his family in Catalonia and enjoying time with his family – even if the confinement with his children has been ‘very difficult’ sometimes.
The Barcelona players have started individual training prior to a scheduled return for LaLiga
Laliga has given clubs strict medical guidelines and for Messi he understands how “essential” it is for authorities to take a hard line.
“The risk of contamination is everywhere, if you leave the house, the risk is already there, so I don’t think you need to think much about it,” he added.
“But we also understand that it is essential to comply with the protocols and to take maximum preventive measures.
“Going back to training is a first step, but we shouldn’t trust ourselves and continue to take all necessary precautions and assume that we should play the games when they arrive, but behind closed doors.”
Barcelona faces the prospect of having to sell a lot of money this summer as it was one of the hardest hit clubs in Spain due to the coronavirus pandemic.
It is believed that every player, except Messi, is available if a realistic offer is made by other clubs.

The idea in Barcelona is to sell players in an attempt to raise enough money for an autograph session, with an interest in Neymar and Inter Milan’s Lautaro Martinez.
When asked about his thoughts on the prospect of his Argentine countryman joining him in the Nou Camp, he remained cautious, although he quickly emphasized Martinez’s strengths.
“I think he’s a very complete attacker,” he said. “He’s strong, he dribbles well, he has an eye for goal, he knows how to protect the ball. Anyway, we’ll have to see what eventually happens to him and other names.”
