Former calypso monarch Melvin Fixed drowns


The calypso group in Dominica is mourning the loss of life of four-time calypso monarch, Melvin Fixed, “Solo” who drowned on Sunday.

Police mentioned the 75-year-old, who resided in the US, had been on trip, when he received into misery whereas swimming in an space referred to as Tibay in Portsmouth.

The authorities mentioned efforts have been made to resuscitate the singer, who was within the firm of his household on the time of the incident. He was subsequently transported to the Reginald Fitzgerald Armour Hospital in Portsmouth the place he was formally pronounced useless.

Solo was well-known for his calypsos together with “Mass within the Cemetery”. Melvin Fixed first gained the monarch title in 1973 together with his tunes “Black Man Leads the Method” and “I Pleasing Me Followers” and regained the title in 1975, 1976 and 1977, after failing to repeat in 1974.

Though he was based mostly within the US, he continued to be lively within the music trade performing in competitions overseas.
