If Carson Wentz goes to play quarterback for Indianapolis in 2022, the Colts have no idea it but. A yr after buying and selling a first- and third-round choose to accumulate the ex-Eagles signal-caller, group brass is reportedly undecided on whether or not to retain Wentz for a second season – largely due to proprietor Jim Irsay’s frustration with the way in which 2021 ended. The wage cap is not going to cease them from making a transfer, both, because the Colts would save important cash by both buying and selling or releasing the QB this offseason.
The query on the coronary heart of the dialog is, what are their options? As CBS Sports activities NFL insider Jason La Canfora famous Wednesday, even when the Colts favor to improve, massive names like Aaron Rodgers spirit Russell Wilson are unlikely available. But when they persuade themselves one other veteran – like Derek Carr or Kirk Cousins or Jimmy Garoppolo – is price pursuing, Wentz’s personal market might broaden. Any buying group (by way of commerce) can be on the hook for Wentz’s $ 28 million cap hit, however the QB’s deal contains no assured cash past 2022, which means he could possibly be lower without charge.
The place, precisely, might Wentz find yourself, if it’s not again in Indy? Listed below are some potential fits:
Unlikely however doable
Giants: New administration has spoken extremely of Daniel Jones, and the cap scenario is just not best. But when coach Brian Daboll is thinking about competitors and not using a complete reset, he had a equally expert (albeit higher) QB in Josh Allen with the Payments. New assistant normal supervisor Brandon Brown labored for the Eagles throughout Wentz’s peak, as did assistant Mike Groh. Plus, they’d permit the Colts to ship him again to the NFC, the place the Giants have seen his greatest stuff firsthand.
Panthers: You can’t put any transfer previous a group with this a lot QB desperation, however after so many failed swings at mercurial choices (Sam Darnold, Cam Newtonetc.), they really feel more likely to handle the place by the draft.
Raiders: This solely applies within the situation the place the Colts zero in on Derek Carr as their most well-liked improve. New coach Josh McDaniels may quite take a swing on Wentz and re-evaluate every part in 2023 than commit long-term, at a steep worth, to a man he’s but to educate. McDaniels, keep in mind, interviewed for the Eagles’ job in 2021 figuring out Wentz could have been his QB.
Saints: Due to their dire cap scenario, Wentz would solely be a sensible goal if he’s launched. And he’d warrant a glance, contemplating their dearth of QBs, however even then, his freewheeling type doesn’t fairly really feel like their strategy.
Texans: Would they be higher off giving second-year man Davis Mills a fuller crack on the high job? Positive. However with Deshaun Watson carried out right here, they may afford competitors, even when simply to arrange an even bigger reset in 2023. The Colts may not favor to maintain Wentz within the division, however then once more, in the event that they’re prepared to dump him after only one yr, what do they care?
Vikings: Just like the Raiders, this works solely within the situation the place their present QB – on this case, Kirk Cousins - is moved. New coach Kevin O’Connell likes Cousins, however in addition they have a brand new GM who may not favor to increase Kirk, who can save the group $ 35M if he’s dealt. Including Wentz, a North Dakota native who grew up a Vikings fan, would permit them to re-evaluate in 2023.
The favorites
Broncos: Aaron Rodgers is the dream, however a far-fetched one, contemplating his improved relationship with the Packers. Except it’s Russell Wilson (additionally unlikely) or Deshaun Watson (who has an enormous off-field asterisk), would they quite pay for Jimmy Garoppolo, who’s perhaps barely safer than Teddy Bridgewater? With loads of cap area, they may afford to pair Wentz with a rookie and provides themselves a number of choices after 2022.
Buccaneers: They’d a lot favor a safer, famous person repair after Tom Brady’s (short-term?) retirement, so Rodgers, Wilson and Watson will all get appears to be like. Garoppolo and Jameis Winston may, too. However Bruce Arians has talked extremely of Wentz earlier than, and like all the opposite groups right here, they’d have the flexibleness of completely resetting in 2023 anyway.
Commanders: They want a QB, they’ve by no means been afraid of veteran swings, and but Ron Rivera wants one thing greater than one other free-agent flyer (as evidenced by their reported supply for Matthew Stafford in 2021). With near $ 30M in projected cap area, they’ve the cash to drag it off, they usually’ve additionally seen Wentz at his greatest within the NFC East.
Steelers: Whereas a Rodgers commerce can be candy for each events, they really feel much more prone to go along with a tender rebuild at QB as Mike Tomlin wades into post-Ben Roethlisberger waters. Wentz affords some traits of a youthful Ben, and his arrival wouldn’t preclude them from drafting a QB. They’re additionally constructed to play like Wentz’s Colts did in 2021, leaning on the run and protection.
