Guyanese honey producers say they’re going through substantial difficulties exporting locally-made honey into the Caribbean due to legal guidelines in Trinidad and Tobago that block trans-shipment.
Ononaiwu was responding to issues from the Vice Chairman of the Guyana Manufacturing and Providers Affiliation (GMSA), Rafeek Khan, and GMSA Adviser Ramesh Dookhoo who each pointed to the necessity for Trinidad and Tobago to take away the prohibition of transportation of honey from the 88-year outdated Beekeeping and Bee Merchandise Act.
Ononaiwu additionally admitted that honey has been a “longstanding situation on the agenda” of CARICOM’s ministerial Council for Commerce and Financial Growth (COTED) that might stay there till it’s resolved.

Trinidad and Tobago’s honey, bees and bee merchandise are guided by the island’s age-old Meals and Drug Act of 1960 and Beekeeping and Bee Merchandise Act of 1935.
And as per the nation’s Beekeeping and Bee Merchandise Act, solely honey originating from the Windward and Leeward Islands could be transshipped to the twin-island republic.
The nation initially restricted the importation of honey from Grenada and different Caribbean international locations over issues a couple of doubtlessly disastrous illness of honeybees, the American Foulbrood illness.
Nonetheless, Grenada took the problem to COTED in 2013 and the Council determined that Trinidad’s denial of market entry was in violation of the Revised Treaty of Chaguaramas, CARICOM’s central treaty.
The dual island republic was then directed to elevate the prohibition on the import and trans-shipment of honey.
