Opinions [may contain spoilers]:
“IN The Phantom of the Theatergothic romance and Grand Guignol thrills are diluted by Chinese language censorship and flawed writing, however nonetheless carried out with visually enchanting and satisfying macabre aplomb. “LP Hugo, Asian Movie Strike
“Followers of cheesier Chinese language motion pictures will certainly get pleasure from bits and items of what The Phantom of the Theater has to supply, however it’s generally a troublesome journey. It seems like a film which may serve its cult viewers alongside the best way, simply due to the sheer absurdity of a few of its historical past and visible components … “Reifschneider, Blood Brothers
”… Extra a romantic thriller with a nod to The Phantom of the Opera, Jing Gang Shans scarred, capped villain lurks round and makes use of chandeliers, secret passages and the like. The movie truly has a fairly excessive physique depend, and Yip packs a number of suspense and spooky motion that retains issues going quick, albeit chaotically. “Japanese kicks
“Phantom is filled with spooky gildings and appears nice. With its nostalgic coronary heart and a little bit of violence on display screen to talk of, it might be an applicable Halloween choice to look at with older dad and mom (however the scenes that set up the destiny of the acrobats could also be too intense for younger youngsters). Advisable for followers of tragic Gothic romance and Thirties type … “JB Spins
“The Phantom is a comparatively peripheral character. He’s disfigured within the face and wears a masks, however a lot of the plot within the second half entails him and the equal of Christine being concerned in an intensive rip-off. […] Thus phantom has now been distorted into not a romance, however a complete revenge plan that has virtually nothing to do with the unique story. “Moria
“Style followers could also be disillusioned because the tone shifts from supernatural to piranhedral to bittersweet romantic. However the rigorously stylized performances of Lin and Yang go a great distance towards making the transitions clean and within the closing scenes surprisingly satisfying.” Joe Leydon, Selection
“Cecil Cheng’s visible results are really a spotlight of the movie, exhibiting the obvious ghosts of the doomed acrobatic troupe that now plagues the theater. Nonetheless, the titular phantom is definitely a human, and when their id is revealed, Cheng did an excellent job with the make-up results of this phantom. “World Movie Geek
“Filmed solely on units, phantom honor in his personal artwork. The movie is carried by sweeping widescreen photos, dynamic digicam actions, spectacular particular results and a colour scheme that contrasts icy blue shades with fiery purple. There will not be any actual ghosts in that theater, however the CGI is creepy. “Washington Put up
