Carlos Del Rio-Wilson, a 4-star quarterback, will switch from Florida to Syracuse
Syracuse, NY – Carlos Del Rio-Wilson, a four-star quarterback in the 2021 class, will switch from the University of Florida to Syracuse, he announced on Instagram on Tuesday.
Rio-Wilson was ranked No. 146 player in the country in last year’s freshman class by 247Sports and No. 17 quarterback. He was red-shirted last season in Florida, where he was listed as 6-foot-2 and 225 pounds.
Rio-Wilson first played high school football at McEachern (Powder Springs, Georgia) High School and Cartersville (Georgia) High School. Cartersville is the high school where former Clemson star Trevor Lawrence played.
Rio-Wilson also participated in the Elite 11 Finals, a competition for the nation’s best high school quarterbacks.
In Florida, returning quarterback Anthony Richardson had a strong spring that apparently secured the starting job. The Gators also picked up Ohio State transfer Jack Miller III and had another quarterback, Jalen Kitna, who arrived in 2021 with Rio-Wilson.
New Florida coach Billy Napier was free of Rio-Wilson after his decision to switch, according to USA Today’s David Rosenberg, who called him “first class” with a strong work ethic.
“I think he just observed the spring training and felt that a change of scenery would be good for him in terms of competing and finding an opportunity to play,” Napier said according to the publication. »And I can relate to that. I was a quarterback and you want to play. You want it to be your team at some point. I respect that decision and we fully support him and help him with everything he can do in the future. “
According to 247Sports, his other offers from high school included Miami, Florida State and Michigan.
Syracuse return to starting quarterback Garrett Shrader, but the Orange struggled to send the ball last season with him under center.
The team has now added competition in the quarterback space and future talents in the form of more transfers.
In addition to Rio-Wilson, they picked up orange transfer Dan Villari from Michigan before the spring.
Justin Lamson is also returning after a good spring performance, but is out indefinitely after an injury, while three-star quarterback LaNorris Sellers is expected to arrive as a member of the class in 2023.
