Kumail Nanjiani reveals the big difference by filming Star Wars vs. Marvel

Actor Kumail Najiani has had a couple of amazing years. First, he came to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as one of the main faces of the cosmic team in Eternal. Then he was cast in the long-awaited Star Wars series Obi-Wan Kenobi. It is quite high-profile projects to be part of the back-to-back – the main writer of Knights of the Moon even wanted him in his own series.

According to a potential leak, his new role as Haja in the Star Wars universe will be a contact from Bail Organa – so he will apparently be a friend of Kenobi. His character can also be briefly seen in the latest trailer for the project.

However, one has to wonder how different is the experience of working on Marvel Studios projects compared to Star Wars? Fortunately, someone thought of asking the exact question to the actor in a recent interview.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Eternal and Obi-Wan Kenobi Actor Kumail Nanjiani commented on his role and how his experience with Star Wars differed from his time at Marvel Studios.

The actor noted how with his time on the Marvel Studios project, “people [didn’t] really know these characters [or that] part of the MCU, “ but for the upcoming Star Wars series, they were “really stepping into something that has been established for a very long time:”

“I think the difference with Star Wars was … It’s clear that you work at Eternals, it’s the MCU. Everyone’s so fan of MCU, but we’re working in a way with new characters, right? People do not really know these characters and do not really know this part of MCU. So it’s a new universe that is being created while you’re on the road. With Star Wars you really step into something that has been established for a very long time “It’s still the same visual language people know these characters.”

Kumail went on to admit how “[he’s] never done a job where you could feel every single day that everyone was grateful to be there, ” something he felt strongly while working on Obi-Wan Kenobi:

“So for me, that’s what sets Star Wars apart from really any other job I’ve done, how the whole crew was a massive Star Wars fan. Every day, people wore Star Wars clothes, T-shirts with Chewbacca on. And just “Everyone was really, really excited every day to work on Star Wars. And I’ve never done a job where you could feel every single day that everyone was grateful to be there.”

He made it clear “The joy of it for the crew was truly unique and special:”

“I would go to work and they would say, ‘Oh, you know what we did yesterday, we did this.’ And then we did this, and then we did this. ‘ And everyone was just really happy to go to work every day. These are things that everyone has loved since they can remember, and the fact that they are getting started with it was not lost on this crew. So the joy of it for the crew was really unique and special. “

Kumail revealed that his character’s name is Haja and how “[he] would love to play this character again ” in the future, exclaimed how “[he’s] never managed to play a character like this before: “

“That’s all I’ve been thinking. I do not know what it does, but yes, I would love to play this character again. Not just because of Star Wars, but it’s a really, really, really funny character. to play. I’ve never played a character like this before. I think it’s a type of character that we have not even seen in Star Wars with a cheater, you know?

To be prepared for the role, the actor “searched many things up regarding [magicians and con men] to learn how to really play a character like this: “

“He can talk people into things, so it’s a really fun character to play. And I actually did a lot of research online about scammers and magicians. Because magicians, let’s face it, they’re like scammers, right? They fool people. So I’ve really looked up a lot of things about it to learn how to really play a character like this. And I love this character so much. It would really be a dream come true to play him again. Can we get Kathleen Kennedy here? ”

Love for Star Wars triumphs?

It’s interesting to hear how he felt so strongly love and passion for Star Wars from those around him as he worked Obi-Wan Kenobibut did not feel the same way Eternal. Clearly, they are all newly introduced characters, but even then, one would think that there would still be a passion for Marvel in the air.

Hopefully, all that passion can be translated well on screen, and the upcoming Star Wars project will do well. However, it would be hard for it to make it worse than that Eternalwhich was not well received by the masses.

As for Haja, the character of the actor, many had speculated that Kumail Nanjiani could play the infamous Hondo Ohnaka, who appears consistently in both Clone War and Rebels animated series. While this may not seem to be the case based on the quick glimpse of the actor in the recent trailer, it’s ironic how he plays the same scammer-type person.

Kumail is an amazing actor, so the more of him, the better. Hopefully, his character survives his confluence with Obi-Wan and can easily return in other projects later.

Obi-Wan Kenobi hits Disney + on May 27th.
